These spooky witch finger cookies are buttery, almond-flavored, and disturbingly realistic—perfect for Halloween parties. They’re easy to make and guaranteed to get a reaction.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks, 226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups (312g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 23 drops green food coloring
  • 3036 slivered almonds (for fingernails)
  • 2 tablespoons red jam or jelly (for ‘blood’ effect)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light, fluffy, and pale in color (3-4 minutes with a stand mixer, 5 minutes with a hand mixer). Scrape down the sides halfway through.
  2. Add the wet ingredients: Beat in the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract until fully combined. Add 2-3 drops of green food coloring and mix until evenly distributed.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt until no lumps remain.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
  5. Chill the dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and flatten into a disk. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes (up to 30 minutes).
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  7. Shape the fingers: Take about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll into a log 3-4 inches long. Taper one end for the fingertip and widen the other end. Place on prepared baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart. Repeat with remaining dough (makes 30-36 cookies).
  8. Create the knuckles: Use the back of a small knife or toothpick to press horizontal lines into each finger for knuckles (2-3 lines per finger). Also press a small line at the tip for the cuticle.
  9. Add the fingernails: Press one slivered almond firmly into the tip of each finger, angled slightly upward. Press in enough to stay put during baking, but leave the tip exposed.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are just barely golden brown. Centers will still look soft. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Add the ‘blood’: Once cool, use a small spoon or pastry brush to dab a tiny bit of red jam at the base of each almond fingernail.

Notes

Don’t skip chilling the dough—it prevents spreading. Press almonds at an angle for realistic nails. Start checking cookies at 10 minutes to avoid overbaking. Cookies taste even better the next day.
