Spooky Mummy Sausage Rolls - featured image

A fun and easy Halloween party appetizer featuring mini sausages wrapped in flaky puff pastry to resemble mummies. These savory rolls are quick to assemble, crowd-pleasing, and perfect for spooky gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry (high butter content, thawed)
  • 12–16 mini sausages or cocktail wursts (pork, chicken, or veggie)
  • 1 large egg (beaten with 1 tablespoon water for egg wash)
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds (optional, for eyes)
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Tomato paste or ketchup (for serving/dipping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C) and place a rack in the center position.
  2. Remove puff pastry sheets from the fridge and let sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes until pliable but still cold.
  3. Unroll pastry onto a lightly floured surface and cut into strips approximately 2 inches wide.
  4. Place a sausage at one end of a pastry strip and wrap the pastry around it, leaving small gaps between wraps to create a ‘bandage’ look. Pinch ends to seal.
  5. Arrange wrapped sausages on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving 1 inch of space between each.
  6. Press two mustard seeds into the top of each mummy to create eyes (optional).
  7. Brush the tops of the pastries generously with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is puffed, golden, and flaky.
  9. Let cool for 5 minutes on the tray before serving warm with tomato paste.

Notes

Ensure the pastry remains cold before baking for maximum flakiness. If the dough gets warm, chill it for 10 minutes. Do not over-wrap the sausage, as the meat needs to cook through. For a spicy version, swap in chorizo or jalapeΓ±o sausages. Avoid microwaving leftovers as it makes the pastry soggy; reheat in an oven or air fryer.
