Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 pound soft pretzels (about 810 mini pretzels or 4 large)
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cubed
  • 8 ounces Colby Jack cheese, cubed
  • 6 ounces hard salami, sliced
  • 6 ounces prosciutto, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mixed olives (green and kalamata)
  • 1/2 cup whole grain mustard or honey mustard
  • 1/2 cup cornichons or small pickles
  • Fresh grapes or apple slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the warm cheese dip first. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, shredded Monterey Jack, and milk. Stir continuously until everything is melted and smooth, about 5-7 minutes. Once smooth, stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and cayenne. Transfer to your slow cooker or serving bowl and set to warm.
  2. Prep the meats while the cheese melts. Unfold the salami slices and fold each one into a quarter-circle. Arrange them in a small pile or fan them out on the board. For the prosciutto, separate the slices gently and loosely drape them in a small cluster.
  3. Cube the cheeses. Cut the sharp cheddar and Colby Jack into 1-inch cubes. Arrange the cubes in separate piles or in a staggered line across the board.
  4. Prepare the pretzels. If using large soft pretzels, cut them into 2-inch pieces. If using mini pretzels, leave them whole. Arrange them in a large cluster near the cheese dip.
  5. Fill the small bowls. Spoon the olives into one ramekin, the cornichons into another, and the mustard into a third. Place these bowls in the corners or edges of the board.
  6. Assemble the board. Place the warm cheese dip in the center or slightly off-center. Arrange the pretzels around it in a loose ring. Fill in the remaining space with the meats, cheese cubes, and bowls. Add fresh grapes or apple slices in any gaps for color contrast.
  7. Serve immediately. Place the board in the center of the table or coffee table. If using a slow cooker for the dip, keep it plugged in or use a tea light warmer to maintain temperature.

Notes

For best results, take cream cheese out of fridge 30 minutes before starting. Buy an extra bag of pretzelsβ€”people always eat more than you think. The cheese dip can be made up to 2 days ahead and reheated. Cube cheeses and slice meats up to 1 day ahead. Assemble board about 30 minutes before guests arrive. Keep dip warm on low setting and stir every 20-30 minutes.
