A warm, aromatic, and comforting spiced apple cider made effortlessly in a slow cooker with just a few simple ingredients. This recipe infuses apple cider with orange, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger for a deep, complex flavor perfect for chilly days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (8 cups) apple cider (fresh-pressed preferred)
  • 1 large orange, sliced into rounds
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 6–8 whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 1 star anise pod (optional)
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–4 tablespoons brown sugar (optional, to taste)

Instructions

  1. Wash the orange and ginger thoroughly. Slice the orange into thin rounds and the ginger into thin coins.
  2. Place the orange slices, ginger slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and star anise into the slow cooker pot. If using a mesh spice bag, place the spices inside it first.
  3. Pour the 64 ounces of apple cider over the spices and fruit, ensuring everything is submerged.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and set it to LOW. Cook for 4-6 hours. Avoid using HIGH heat to prevent bitterness.
  5. Once cooking is complete, turn off the slow cooker. Remove the spice bag if used, or strain the cider through a fine-mesh sieve to remove solids.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Taste the cider and add brown sugar or honey if additional sweetness is desired, stirring until dissolved.
  8. Serve warm in mugs.

Notes

Use whole spices only; ground spices will make the cider gritty and cloudy. Do not boil the cider when reheating to preserve delicate aromatics. The flavor improves overnight. If using apple juice instead of cider, the flavor will be lighter, so you may want to increase the spices slightly.
