A rich, creamy, and spiced holiday drink made from scratch with simple ingredients. This copycat eggnog latte mimics the custard-like quality of traditional eggnog without the artificial sweetness, ready in under 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso or 1 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or oat milk/coconut milk for dairy-free)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Extra nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cinnamon until pale yellow and slightly thickened (about 2 minutes).
  2. Pour milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until hot but not boiling (around 150Β°F/65Β°C).
  3. Slowly pour about 1/4 cup of the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture while whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
  4. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the rest of the milk and whisk gently.
  5. Froth the milk using an electric handheld frother or French press until creamy and doubled in volume.
  6. Brew the espresso or strong coffee.
  7. Pour the spiced milk mixture into a warm mug, top with frothed milk, and pour espresso over the top.
  8. Garnish with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh nutmeg for the best aroma. If concerned about raw eggs, use pasteurized eggs or heat the milk-egg mixture to 160Β°F (71Β°C) to pasteurize. For a stronger coffee flavor, use a Moka pot. Strain the milk mixture through a fine-mesh sieve if you want a smoother texture. Do not freeze the mixture with eggs in it.
