A creamy, comforting sweet potato casserole featuring a rich bourbon and brown sugar glaze, offering a sophisticated twist on a classic holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds medium sweet potatoes (Garnet or Beauregard variety)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup good-quality bourbon
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F.
  2. Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly. Place whole potatoes in a steamer basket over boiling water, cover, and steam for 30-40 minutes until very tender.
  3. Let potatoes cool for 10 minutes, then scoop out the flesh and discard skins.
  4. Transfer potato flesh to a large mixing bowl. Add softened butter, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Mash until smooth but slightly textured.
  5. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, bourbon, maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons butter. Whisk constantly until melted and glossy (about 5 minutes). Remove from heat.
  6. Spread the sweet potato mash evenly into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Pour the warm bourbon glaze over the mash and spread to cover the surface.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the glaze bubbles and turns slightly caramelized.
  9. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For a dairy-free option, swap butter and cream for coconut oil and full-fat coconut milk. If avoiding alcohol, substitute bourbon with extra maple syrup and almond extract. Avoid over-mashing to prevent a gummy texture.
