A sweet, boozy, and spiced sangria that balances tart apples with rich caramel and dry red wine. Perfect for autumn gatherings, this drink is easy to make and serves as a crowd-pleasing conversation starter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 750ml dry red wine (Pinot Noir or Merlot)
  • 2 cups fresh, unfiltered apple cider
  • 1/2 cup high-quality caramel sauce
  • 2 large Honeycrisp or Fuji apples, diced
  • 1 large Bosc pear, sliced
  • 1 navel orange, sliced into rounds
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1/4 cup brandy or applejack (optional)
  • Large ice cubes or frozen apple slices

Instructions

  1. Wash all fruit thoroughly. Dice apples into half-inch cubes, slice pears similarly, and cut orange into thin rounds, removing seeds. Place cut fruit in a large bowl.
  2. Pour dry red wine into a large glass pitcher. Add apple cider and optional brandy. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Drizzle caramel sauce into the pitcher. Whisk or stir until fully dissolved and the liquid turns an opaque amber color. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  4. Add cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves to the pitcher (use a mesh bag for easy removal if desired). Stir to distribute spices.
  5. Add the prepared fruit to the pitcher. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Remove from refrigerator. Add ice cubes or frozen apple slices to serving glasses. Ladle sangria into glasses, ensuring each serving includes fruit. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or apple slice and serve immediately.

Notes

For best flavor, let the sangria chill overnight. If serving at a party, ensure you have enough glasses. To avoid dilution, use frozen apple slices instead of regular ice. The drink keeps in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Do not freeze with fruit inside.
