A rich, creamy, and comforting spiked hot chocolate recipe perfect for Halloween. This easy stovetop drink combines dark chocolate, milk, and your choice of liqueur for a cozy, adult-friendly treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Whole Milk
  • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1 cup Dark Chocolate Chips (60% cocoa)
  • 1–2 tbsp Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 pinch Sea Salt
  • 2 oz Peppermint Schnapps OR Irish Cream Liqueur OR Amaretto OR Whiskey/Bourbon
  • Whipped Cream (for garnish)
  • Candy Corn (for garnish)
  • Mini Marshmallows (for garnish)
  • Crushed Peppermint Candy (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the dark chocolate chips to the milk.
  3. Whisk constantly as the chocolate begins to melt to ensure a smooth texture, avoiding boiling the milk.
  4. Continue whisking until all chocolate is melted and the mixture is uniform (approx. 3-4 minutes).
  5. Stir in the granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  6. Heat the mixture for another 1-2 minutes until hot but not simmering, then remove from heat.
  7. Let the mixture cool for 30 seconds, then stir in your chosen liqueur or spirit.
  8. Ladle into mugs and top with whipped cream, candy corn, marshmallows, or crushed peppermint.
  9. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Do not boil the milk as it can scald and create a skin. Use real chocolate chips rather than powder for better texture. If the mixture gets too thick, add a splash more milk. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the liquor and add almond extract. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat gently.
